    Your Support Needed for Annual Spring Basket Drive

    The GIVE Denver Spring Basket Drive is underway at Denver Human Services. Each spring, social workers nominate a child in need to receive a gift basket to make their day brighter. GIVE Denver is seeking community partners to donate pre-assembled baskets and items to create baskets for an estimated 400 children in need. Items to donate include: baskets, candy, small toys, coloring books and crayons, tooth brushes and toothpaste, grass filler, and monetary donations for unmet need. Please drop off donations by March 4 at the GIVE Denver Center, 1200 Federal Blvd., Denver, CO 80204. Checks should be made payable to Denver Human Services, attn: GIVE Denver.

    Free Tax Preparation Assistance at DHS Castro Building

    Free, volunteer income tax-preparation assistance (VITA) is available through March 29 at Denver Human Services’ Castro building in the Child Support Intake area (offices 1082 & 1084) for simple returns for individuals & families with qualifying incomes. IRS has partnered with AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide program to make this service available in the community. 

    When: Weds. & Thurs., 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

    Help End Homelessness at a Denver Nuggets Game!

    The Denver Nuggets are teaming up with Denver’s Road Home by offering specially priced tickets to the LA. Clippers game on March 7. Each ticket grants you access to the game, provides $10 toward the purchase of any food, beverage or retail merchandise at the arena, and $5 from every ticket purchased benefits Denver’s Road Home to end homelessness as we know it. Tickets start at $30 apiece.

    Due March 1: Summer Programming Proposals

    The Denver Office of Children’s Affairs is seeking requests for proposals to fund summer programs.  Up to $250,000 in funds are available to nonprofit agencies and Denver Public Schools 21st Century sites for summer programs serving Denver school-age children and youth.  Programs should offer a mix of academic and youth development activities and services and be used for service expansion.

    Due March 15: AmeriCorps Community Building Partnership for Youth in Transition Host Sponsor Sites

    Department of Human Services (DDHS) is releasing a Request for Application (RFA) seeking qualified applicants to become Host Sponsor Sites for the AmeriCorps Community Building Partnership for Youth in Transition (CBPYT) program. The CBPYT program services focus on providing specialized services for youth between the ages of 15 and 22 who are transitioning towards self-sufficiency. This RFA will identify Host Sites for the program year 2013-2014 which begins September 9, 2013 and ends July 31, 2014. Host Sites must currently work with youth between the ages of 15 and 22 who are transitioning towards self-sufficiency.

    It’s tax season! Join us for an evening of tips on preparing to file taxes for your small business.

    Mar. 7, 14, & 23: Community Emergency Response Training (Denver CERT)

    This emergency preparedness training will include how to plan for an emergency, and teaches basic response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and emergency medical operations.  Participants

    are encouraged to support emergency response by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in our community.

    When: March 7, 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM, and March 14, 2013, 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM. Class exercise will be March 23, 2013, 8:30am to 3:30pm

    May 29-31: Network Leadership Training Academy

    This three-day comprehensive workshop will provide skill-building and competency development for practitioners who are actively engaging partners and developing collaborative networks to reach their organizational goals. A 10% discount is available for organizations sending a group of people. The fee of this academy is:

    $380 for students 

    $500 for public/nonprofit organizations 

    $550 for businesses/corporations

    Free Dental Care for Old Age Pension Recipients

    Individuals can receive help with an exam, x-rays, fillings, extractions, dentures and partials. In order to qualify you must be over age 60 and a resident of Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Gilpin, or Jefferson county. Priority is given to those in greatest economic and social need.

    Parent/Family Engagement Survey

    Calling all moms and dads, aunts and uncles, teachers, siblings, grandparents, mentors and anyone else who cares about the youth in their lives: The Healthy Colorado Youth Alliance is conducting a statewide Family Advocate survey to find out what motivates adults to act in support of youth sexual health. Once you complete the survey you can choose to enter a drawing fora $50 gift card.

    March 4: 2013 Social Work Forum

    The Student Association of Social Workers (SASW) invites students and the community to a forum. The purpose is to provide key information on human trafficking that not only effects our nation, but directly impacts Denver. Come learn from local experts in our community about the multi-disciplinary approach to ending modern-day trafficking and how you can help in combating human trafficking.

    Mar 6 & 7: Evaluation Intensive

    This is your chance to become the evaluation expert at your organization. JVA’s evaluation team makes learning evaluation fun, clear and frustration-free! In this two-day, March 6 and 7 training, you will learn basic terminology and concepts used in evaluation, how to design and use logic models and evaluation plans, begin to tackle evaluation methods, data collection and analysis, and discuss the role of evaluation reporting.

    Mar. 14: Nonprofit Training: Effectively Working with Local Government

    The Denver Office of Strategic Partnerships is hosting an interactive workshop for nonprofits looking to build or strengthen partnerships with local government. This session focuses on the nuts and bolts of building government-nonprofit partnerships. From assessing your own readiness to partner, to gaining practical tools to research government agencies, to discussing common challenges in building partnerships and how to address them, this workshop lays a foundation for nonprofits to create partnerships that enhance community impact.

    Mar. 14 & 29: The Gang Reduction Initiative of Denver’s (GRID) Training    

    When working with gang-involved youth and young adults it is often challenging to know where to begin, what to target and how to provide meaningful interventions.  This workshop will provide the materials, techniques and strategies needed to effectively intervene with youth involved in or at-risk of involvement in gangs.
